Fox Factory Vehicles: The Legacy Behind the Custom Truck Upfitter

Every badass truck on the road has a story, but only a few have rewritten the rules of what custom pickups can be. Today, we’re going to highlight Fox Factory Vehicle’s break into the upfitting industry from a group of humble conversion van brands to custom trucks that don’t skimp on quality and functionality. Together, they share a legacy of upfitted trucks that push limits, turn heads and break the mold.

Let’s break down the history of the brands that make up Fox Factory Vehicles (FFV) and how they’ve redefined themselves as the largest vehicle upfitter in the custom truck space.

The Legacy of Fox Factory

With roots that span over 40 years, Fox Factory Vehicles (FFV) represents more than just custom builds. It’s the evolution of a powerhouse that started with a merger with Fox Factory and Tuscany Motor Company in 2017.

As one of Fox Factory's major customers, Tuscany Motor Company brought their expertise in the custom upfit industry to Fox Factory, setting the tone for future acquisitions and innovations in the upfitting space. The sport truck group brought together brands like BDS Suspension, JKS, Zone Off-Road and Crawltek to the Fox Factory family of brands.

SCA Joins The Family of Truck Upfitters

The ultimate symbol of status and luxury in the 1980’s was the conversion van that introduced a new level of travel that combined comfort with style and functionality. That spirit of upfitting vans influenced custom trucks not long after, pushing the idea that trucks can be an off-road rig, comfortable daily driver and recreational vehicle all in one.

After realizing the potential of the upfit industry, in 2020 Fox Factory purchased the SCA Performance Group which was comprised of brands like Black Widow, Rocky Ridge and Rocky Mountain Truckworks.

In combining both Tuscany and SCA Performance, Fox Factory became the largest vehicle upfitter in the custom upfit industry. FFV continues to redefine customization and craftsmanship for those who demand more from their truck.

Southern Hospitality

For the Black Widow brand, it all started in 1979 in the quiet town of Trussville, Alabama. They started as a small fiberglass shop that repaired vehicles for a local coffee shop. Beginning in the 1980’s until the mid-2010s, the ownership team dedicated their craft and facility to building conversion vans and pickups under the name “Southern Comfort.”

In the mid 2000’s the group developed the iconic Black Widow name. Under this name they would even build a few custom cars as well.

Built for the Bold

Not long after Black Widow started carving its path, Rocky Ridge entered the scene with their family-owned brand in 1983 with founders Tommy and Jean Hendrix. In a similar story to Black Widow, Rocky Ridge got their start in the conversion van business before evolving to modifying pickup trucks. The Hendrix's modified the vans under a carport at their personal home before opening up their official operations in Franklin Springs, GA in 2002.

Rocky Ridge showed resilience even through the economic downturn during 2008, where they remained one of only two conversion companies to stay afloat. This led to further expansion nationwide, pushing them to the front of the conversion industry. Their unwillingness to fail positioned Rocky Ridge as a trusted partner of OEM giants like Ford, GM, RAM, Nissan and Jeep.

Over the last 40 years, they have served high-profile clients including Kid Rock, Jason Aldean and NASCAR champion Chase Elliot. The Rocky Ridge brand truly lives by its mantra “built for the bold,” by building trendy upfit packages for the driver who lives to reject the status quo.

A Brand Empire is Born

Tuscany Motor Company, founded in 1988, laid the groundwork for redefining custom vehicle design. Their knack for building one-of-a-kind conversion vans lead to 30+ years of success and strategic partnerships. Notably, their partnership with Tonka in the mid-2010's put the brand on the map. Not long after, Tuscany formed relationships with other major names like Shelby American and Harley-Davidson as officially licensed vehicles.

These partnerships solidified FFV’s dominance in the custom truck market, giving access to advanced manufacturing facilities across the United States (Trussville, AL, Franklin Springs, GA and Elkhart, IN).

Redefining the Industry

Through constant innovation and the integration of advanced technology, Fox Factory has revolutionized the high-performance truck market. Merging with the SCA Performance family of brands meant that Fox Factory could now serve a wide range of customers with varying needs, passions, and desires. One thing that FFV customers share is their desire to be unique and stand out from the crowd.

So, what sets Fox Factory Vehicles apart from the rest of the upfitters?

One of the key factors that make our trucks unique is our use of premium, quality components, FOX shocks, and custom paint, parts and other accessories. We produce a large volume of vehicles that allows us to work alongside some of the largest, most trusted and innovative partners in the automotive industry. While we churn out custom vehicles in major numbers, the same level of care and attention we gave at our inception is echoed through our best practices and thorough inspection of each build.

Through the years, we’ve evolved with the ever-changing tide that is the automotive industry by keeping up with current custom vehicle trends. Chrome rims and fiberglass body cladding have evolved into features like performance suspension upgrades, machined wheels and power running boards.

Fox Factory Vehicles come with a bumper-to-bumper 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty that covers the aftermarket parts installed by Fox Factory along with the chassis itself.
