Callsign Commando: A Modern Jeep Built for Those Who Serve

Callsign (noun)- a nickname used in radio communication to replace names for anonymity, ease of use, and unit cohesion. It’s a symbol of identity, purpose, and camaraderie within a unit, and the same culture that inspired the Jeep Wrangler Commando. Building on the legacy of the Jeepster Commando from the 1960s and 1970s, this limited-edition off-road vehicle is exclusively available to our military personnel and veterans.

This collaboration between Jeep and Fox Factory combines legacy and the deep-rooted history of the Jeep’s long-standing support for military efforts both here and abroad. Let’s take a deeper look at the heritage of the Commando and what makes this Jeep unique for those who serve or have served.

Honoring the Jeepster Heritage

The Jeepster Commando (1966-1973), produced by Kaiser Jeep and later American Motors Corporation during the Vietnam War, bridged the gap between early military Jeeps and modern SUVs. It competed against the International Scout and the Ford Bronco, both designed for off-road use.

Though the small SUV segment was still in its infancy, Jeep drew lessons from its military roots to create a capable, versatile vehicle. The Jeepster Commando was built on a modified CJ platform and initially powered by the Hurricane I4 engine, with an optional AMC Dauntless V6. This setup offered a blend of reliability and flexibility, appealing to off-road enthusiasts and everyday drivers.

The Commando came in multiple body styles: convertible with a soft top, station wagon, pickup and a roadster. This gave buyers options without compromising capability. Its design and engineering reflected Jeep’s ongoing connection to military innovation, echoing the original Willys MB and CJ vehicles that helped define the brand.

The modern Jeep Wrangler Commando channels the same independent spirit of the Jeepster, blending a storied heritage with cutting-edge technology and performance for today’s off-road adventurer.

Ready for Battle

Automotive technology and engineering have come a long way since the 1960s, and Jeep demonstrates this with the Commando’s modern 6.4L 392 HEMI V8 engine, producing 470 hp, available with an optional 705-hp Whipple Supercharger. The Commando features a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission paired with a Selec-Trac transfer case, providing smooth shifting and easy switching between 2WD and 4WD without stopping.

Jeep owners will enjoy easy and quick adjustments to changing terrain, along with improved control and traction in challenging conditions.

Equipped with the latest suspension technology from FOX, the 3.0 Factory Race Series shocks and 3.5-inch lift provide the Commando with improved shock absorption, heat dissipation with external reservoirs, and greater control over rough terrain. Increased ground clearance provides better approach, departure, and breakover angles, allowing you to cross sharp crests without scraping or getting stuck.

Additionally, the 3.5-inch lift gave the Commando more clearance to accommodate 37-inch Nitto Ridge Grappler tires and 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels.

Field Tested

The Commando is ready to earn its stripes in the field with trail-ready hardware and equipment. The Mopar stubby steel front bumper, featuring an optional WARN winch, not only increases tire clearance but also provides better durability and protection for the front end. The winch ensures that you’re always ready for anything, whether it's recovering a buddy’s stuck vehicle or just increasing safety and confidence when off-roading solo.

The integrated 5-inch LED lighting package enhances visibility at night or in adverse weather conditions, making it easier to navigate trails and spot obstacles.

The words

The color-matched, steel high-top fenders allow for greater wheel articulation and the fitment of larger tires with more resilience to damage from rocks and debris on the trail. The bimini soft top gives you the open-air feel of owning a Jeep while still protecting you from the sun and unexpected weather. The top is lightweight and easy to remove, making it perfect for those days when you’d rather be top-down.

Adding to that open feel are unique, color-matched tube doors ensure a safe driving experience. The typical undercarriage tire rack has been relocated to the interior to keep the spare accessible and reduces tailgate load for larger tires.

As Cool As It Looks

The paint scheme on the Wrangler Commando pays tribute to its military origins with a color-matched ‘41 paint scheme. Custom leather seats with Commando stitching in the cabin offer durability, comfort, and easy cleaning. Every detail was carefully considered, incorporating subtle, military-inspired design cues that make it both purposeful and capable.
